RELATIONSHIP: How To Overcome The Guilt of Sin (Fornication & Adultery)

Oh! The guilt. The shame. The memories keep replaying in your mind. You are almost frustrated. That feeling! It is good to feel bad for doing something wrong but you should never condemn yourself. Never.

No Condemnation

When I'm asked to describe the niche audience of my blog, I do not hesitate to say "Christian youths". I'm a Christian who blogs for Christians and soon-to-be Christians. Youths who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour. And together we are walking towards knowing God better, living in total obedience and fulfilling purpose. Or aren't we? Of course.

You know when we accepted Christ, the Holy Spirit gives us a new desire - a desire to be like Jesus. This desire steadily draws us towards positive thoughts, values, attitudes, relationships and lifestyle.

But somehow, we find along our Christian journey that our old desires have not completely disappeared. We still find ourselves craving for some thoughts, activities and relationships that take us back to our old lifestyle.

We struggle.

At first, we will always say "No!". But occasionally, we begin to consider "Is not that bad" - giving in to our old desires and finding ourselves saying, doing or thinking things we know deep in our heart is wrong.

We commit sin.

Then we feel guilty.

Guilt is actually good. It keeps us in check. It brings us to that point we first believed. However, guilt is one of Satan's biggest weapons against us. It tears us down, it makes us feel dirty, unworthy, and robs of us of our self-esteem. It stops us from living life filled with positivity, inspiration and love.

I'm writing to help you overcome every form of guilt. This article is not exactly restricted to the sin of fornication and adultery because we generally feel guilty every time we commit sin. You know that. Right?

It's OK for us to feel guilty, but it is not OK to hate ourselves, reject ourselves, and stay guilty for days, weeks or even years. We may feel convicted of sin, but we should never ever experience condemnation. Never.

Now, How Do You Overcome Guilt?

1. Pray: Confess your sins and ask God to forgive you. Be sincere. Pour out your heart to Him. Tell Him everything. You may ask for grace in that area of weakness. Then make a promise to God that you'll always say no when you are tempted to sin. You will find peace after a heartfelt prayer.

2. Forgive Yourself: You have to stop beating yourself up. No matter how hard we try, we will never be able to live without mistakes. If we suffer ourselves and feel terrible when we commit sin, then life will be miserable and frustrating. Learn not to dwell on it for long. Release yourself from the bondage of your past. Forgive yourself and move on. (You may listen to this podcast -  Unlock Yourself)

3. Learn From It: Discover the positive lessons from the experience. Once you have learned what you need to learn, you will be able to let go of the guilt and shame. In the case of fornication, you will know the next relationship would be really different because you would have changed. You wouldn't fall into the same patterns. When I say pattern, I mean the weakest point where you are most tempted.

4. Restitute: If you can repair the damage your action caused, do it. Restitution may mean asking for forgiveness from the one you hurt, making payments or replacing items that you’ve lost, damaged, or stolen. Click to read more

5. Believe Your Freedom: The surest way to overcome guilt is through faith. Put your faith to work. Believe God forgives you when you ask him with all sincerity of heart. He says, "sweetheart, you are free and forgiven!"

God has forgotten your past, you should forget it too. Anytime condemnation tries to come on your way, pay no attention to it. Treat it for what it really is . . .  a lie from the devil.

"Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."
~ Romans 8:1

We have been found not guilty. Let us walk in this light of freedom.
