BOOK REVIEW: 'My Vision' By Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoun

You know how important reading is, right?

I'm considering writing a book review bi-weekly, so that I can pick up the habit of reading and finishing one book per week again. Hmm . . .

'My Vision' Written By Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoun

It is better to capitalize on your strengths and not your weaknesses. I don't know how to review make-up or restaurants, but I do know how to review a book. It's a gift I shouldn't take for granted.

And so I read 'My Vision' written by Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoun. It is probably the first book written by a Muslim that I've ever read. I'm not very sure but I'd like to think so. Why do I have to mention that? It is because I am a Christian who recently discovered that wisdom has no religion, no race and no colour. It bestows on whomever is willing to pay the price.

However, knowing Christ personally is the greatest wisdom anyone can have. Wisdom as the principal thing in life is a serious matter. I crave wisdom. Wisdom enhances better decisions and understanding of people, place and events.

OK. I am not supposed to review the author. But, just in case you didn't know, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoun is currently the Vice-President and Ruler of Dubai. He has initiated a number of development programmes that have geared Dubai government to excellence. And he shares deep insights in this book.

One of the most interesting things about this book is that it relates to you regardless of your occupation, gender, religion, nation or any difference measure for that matter.

It covers leadership, management, employment, decision-making and team work, positivity thinking and idea generation. You will find something that will ginger up your vision, if you read open mindedly.

I found my own ginger in chapter 7; Minding the minds. The chapter talks about creativity and generating ideas. The author (his name is too long) emphasized that we must keep track of our vision by staying inspired. I like that. A creative person should never stop generating ideas.

Hmm . . . Don't swallow. Sip slowly. . .

Excerpts from the book:

"All leaders dream. But only a true leader can turn a dream into a vision and a reality. Vision is the way to rule development and is also a matter of courage and conquering the impossible. It is believing in our ability to achieve our goals; a matter of having clear objectives and realizing them with determination, efficiency and speed, never pausing until our children see their country competing with the world's most successful economic centres."

Amazing. Now I see excellence as the ability to deliver quality service and can be attainable. I have started learning to be more practical, more realistic and more optimistic, focusing on my strengths and unique features.

This paragraph made me fall in love with the author:

" . . . I want to tap the potential of people, inspire them to generate ideas, help them develop wealth, and transform their ideas into major projects and job opportunities . . .
Nothing is more important than people."

Awww . . .

The book comprises of 214 pages covering 13 chapters. Chapter 8 (The importance of my horses) was a shocker. It gave me a better understanding of Psalms 20:7. They actually do believe in horses?

'My Vision' is a thought-provoking and vision-electrifying book. I'd recommend it for all leaders and those working for the government. Specifically, I must say Nigerian politicians need to read this book! There are so many things being overlooked in our country. Our leaders should be humble enough to learn the Dubai way of doing things.

It's time to create.
