BOOK REVIEW: 'The Spider's Web' By Dumebi Ezar Ehigiator

Yay! This book happens to be my first birthday gift this year. Frances visited me for the first time on the very first day of June and said, "I know you like books, so I brought this for you. I'm the first person to give you a gift" Trust me, she beat everyone else to the punch. Thanks babes. You are simply amazing! *blows kisses*

'The Spider's Web' By Dumebi Ezar Ehigiator

I couldn't wait to read this book. It is so beautiful to look at. Lovely cover. Nice design. They say "don't judge a book by its cover", but I literally did this time. I knew it had to be as captivating as its cover. 

'The Spider's Web' is a story about the lives of 4 women: Nnena, Ejiro, Ochuko, and Rahama. The book takes us up from their childhood into how they grew up to tackle what life threw at them.

Nnenna - a girl from a very poor background endures abuse from her husband, a pastor, in order to provide for her parents and siblings.

Ejiro - a teenage girl molested by her drunk father and deceived into prostitution by her assumed boyfriend.

Ochuko - an average city girl who lies and pretends to be a rich girl to catch the man of her dreams.

Rahama - a 40-year old, single, and self-made lady who understands the emotional struggle of being single, yet cops pretty well.

'The Spider's Web' reveals that love makes you do many things - some can be good for you while you please another and some might be detrimental to your happiness while you please another. You could do stupid things because you're "in love". You could be abused without even knowing.

How Ejiro instantly fell in love when Jayjay simply asked, "What's a beautiful girl like you doing out this late on her own?" got me laughing my heart out. (I saw a bit of me there kind of. I can so fall in love for the world.) What about Ochuko? That lady is something else. She gave me some funny idea on how to "catch" a man.

You really should read this book. It is refreshing, insightful and entertaining. You'll laugh and cry altogether. You might even hear yourself cursing. Yeah, it is that deep.

One major thing I like about the book is that it points out the beauty and power of friendship (like 'Saving Grace' By Patricia Gaffney does). I wish everyone sees how women can support one another to grow and be better. I like how the friendship between Nnnena and Ejiro evolved in the story. Dumebi, the author did a fantastic job.

A little criticism: The plot is sometimes very predictable. You can tell what was going to happen next, but it was still very engaging. I enjoyed it to the 371st page - the last page.

Ejiro got to her knees and put her arms around his legs. "Please, Jayjay," she sobbed. "Don't make me kill my baby. It's all I want in the world. I already love it. I want to carry it and keep it safe."

"Come on," he said in something close to a bored tone. "We haven't got all night. We're just lucky he would take you right away. He does brisk business."

She looked up at the window painted black. "Is he a doctor?"

"Does it matter? Look. Ejiro, he's done hundreds of girls. and he is doing it for us at a very cheap rate." 

I recommend this book to anyone who has suffered domestic violence so they can see the need to speak out and seek help. It will be of tremendous help to anyone being abused. I believe when they read it, their mind and brains will start thinking out a way for them to get out of that situation.
