What To Do When You Meet A Celebrity

Can you be friends with celebrities? Yes. It's hard, but it is not impossible.

I’ve stumbled and bumbled when I meet celebrities, especially early on the red carpet moments (more on that later). But my mistakes have taught me a few things. So, here a few tips I’ve picked up along the way . . .

When You Meet A Celebrity

There are always many chances at some point in life when you’ll meet someone who is quite famous. It could be an actor, a musician, or a best-seller author. Or perhaps, a VIP of some sort, like a well-known blogger, entrepreneur or the CEO of a company.

When the opportunity presents itself, you have to make a choice: do you want to be seen as just another fan or would you like to take a shot at developing a professional or even personal relationship?

Anyway, ever since I realised that you get one chance to impress celebrities (and become their best friends for life), I have become more cautious (or is it conscious?) when I meet them.

Follow these rules:

Rule one: Be yourself

Always remember celebrities are people too, just like me and you, so don’t treat them any different than you would anyone else.

Don't try to fake an accent, or proclaim an identity.

Just do you. Presents the real you, warts and all.

Rule two: Stay composed

Don't start screaming and freaking out. You might scare the person away. Just because they're celebrities doesn't mean they enjoy hearing you, as a fan scream in their face.

Don't act overly excited.

By all means, please, don't scream. (talking from experience).

With rule #1 and #2, you can be free to be at your best and to do everything possible to capture the moment.

Rule #1 and #2 determines how you would handle the situation. Whatever you decide to say, remember to breathe. Try not to freak out. And prepare to tell this story forever.

I’ve had few opportunities to meet people who are well-known. To be honest, I feel a bit star-truck at times, having been thrust into events with "big" people.

I think two rules are enough because a rule is a responsibility: you have to enforce it, and you must ensure it applies in all cases.

Tips are less formal and can be even more numerous; they help to handle the situation. Viz:

Tip one: Be Memorable

In many cases, the event at which you meet a celebrity simply won’t allow a chance of meaningful conversation. If there is a crowd of people vying for the person’s attention, then you probably need to just grab an autograph or a selfie and get a picture for social media. But if you have the opportunity to actually engage in conversation, that's a way to make yourself memorable.

Tip Two: Be polite

Remember that celebrities appreciate manners too.

When asking for an autograph or a picture, always be polite. Say “please” when asking, and say “thank you” when they have signed or after the picture has been taken. It's not your right to take a picture with them, it's actually a favour. Duh.

Be respectful and courteous. Treat celebs like royalty.

So, sweeties, there you have it, tips on what to do when you meet a celebrity.

Let's recap:
Be yourself
Don't scream
Stay composed
Be memorable
Be polite

I encourage you to keep these tips the next time you meet one of your celebrities. Remove the stars from your eyes and be yourself. Who knows what might happen next.

P. s These are tips on what to do if you ever get to meet me. We are celebs. You get!

P.s.s This is just one of those many awkward situations. I've written tons of articles about this. Here’s what to do when run into an old friend, when your ex calls you or when you feel miserable on a Monday morning. I also talk about some of my clever ways of appearing confident when I'm nervous.
