How To Make Ankara Statement Earrings With A Scrap Of Carton

Happy Style-Sunday! Yipee. Today I am going to show you how to make unbelievable earrings with your own hands. Excited much!

Ankara Fabric Earrings

Ankara also known as African Prints is a showstopper. You definitely cannot wear Ankara and not be noticed. Ankara style is beautiful, unusual and unique.

And guess what? You can make your own fashionable accessories out of it. No need to spend much for buying. Learn the Do-It-Yourself way.

What You Need

  • Ankara fabric
  • A scrap of carton/cardboard
  • A pair of scissors
  • Fabric glue
  • Iron
  • A pin
  • Studs

Let's Do This 🙌

1. Get everything you need in one place.

Most times the fabric I use are scraps I get after cutting and/or sewing a fashionable style of clothes; it could be a skirt, a dress or a top.

If you don't sew your clothes yourself, tell your tailor to keep scraps of your fabric for you, then use them for this project. :)

2. Study your fabric. Identify which area of the fabric—pattern, colour, shape—should form your beautiful earring.

I already imagined it. I knew I wanted to make two circle-shaped earrings.

3. Turn to the alternate side of your chosen area of the fabric, and cover with fabric glue.

Don't ever think of using super glue. It kent werk.

I personally recommend Top Bond because it is very affordable and always available.

4. You can either allow the glue to dry for a few minutes or use a hot pressing iron to make it dry faster.

5. Carefully cut out the shape you had imagined in your head. Circles, stars, and hearts are my most favourable shapes when it comes to DIY earrings.

Ensure that both earrings are nicely cut into your preferred shape. You don't want one ear looking different from the other in any way.

For circles, you should have something like these.

7. Don't forget the other sides of your earrings are still revealing the scrap of carton you used, so you have to cover it up.

Cover that area with fabric glue and then place it on a piece of the same Ankara fabric.

Covering both sides of your earring gives no chance to anyone knowing you used a scrap of carton. 😉

You can also use a cardboard instead. The carton/cardboard adds thickness to your fabric . . . which makes your earrings firm and stable.

8. Create a tiny hole at a top end of your cut out shape using a sharp pin, a needle or any sharp pinpointing object like a ballpoint pen.

9. Move the sharp pin in and out of the fabric a couple of times. This will ensure the hole is easily penetrable.

Get your studs.

10. Fix your studs into the holes you created.

There you go. Your earrings are ready to be rocked. Go out and make a statement. :)
