Redefine Your Weaknesses
At our local church departmental meeting when Bro Gabriel (yes, I have to mention his real name here 🙈) casually made a remark about me, everyone laughed and it affected me for a minute. I became so uncomfortable that I had to step out of the room in order to avoid any awkward reaction.
It wasn't an insulting comment tho, but it was a hit on one of my insecurities.
He said,
And I felt it on a deep level.
Piercing!
I can be terribly insecure much of the time. How I get to handle it is what I want to tell you . . .
Our past experience is the root cause of our insecurities.
Everyone I have ever known — I take that back — every likable person I have ever known either in person or through their books has admitted to periods of sheer insecurity. They looked at themselves from the perspective of someone else — perhaps a person with no appreciation of their gifts, personality traits, abilities—and judged themselves unfairly according to the perverted view.
I'm no exception.
I grew up hearing my peers make fun of my tiny-weeny voice which I now refer to as soft. My voice was something I struggled to love and accept for years.
You too. It might be your fatness/thinness that people made jest of, your height, your poor performance or anything about you.
When people constantly mimick the way you move or speak and laugh about it, that’s mockery. It's sad. It hurts. It's scary. And it can be difficult to appreciate that aspect of you.
The pitch of my voice rises to a shrill screech for added effect when I'm super excited, enthusiastic or having a great rush of emotions. And I know what a cartoon character l can be. It's just not pleasant hearing someone else say that to my face. Jeez. Lol.

I got home and started ruminating on that remark over and over and over again. "Why did he say that?" "Do I really act like a cartoon character?" "Is that a good thing?" I kept looking for every way possible to find a ray of positivity in this experience, because words of affirmation is desperately needed when self-doubt starts to creep in.
When you are feeling insecure, confess positive words about yourself. That's the best time to list all the qalities you love about you.
That was how I found something that made feel confident again:

On one of those lists that people are always writing — suggestions on what to do if you are feeling insecure, they said:
Consider it beautiful.
Insecurity — vulnerability of spirit — is essentially humility, which is a divine quality. Insecurity is the gift. With insecurity, we admit that it’s not all about us, and that belief in this world of self-centeredness is quite lovely.
I have decided to consider my insecurity as a blessing. A lot of insecurity exists where I have yet to prove myself to myself. I try to use my insecurity as a motivation instead of a crutch, and you can, too.

I wasn't happy when he said I act like a cartoon character, but see, it inspired this post you are reading now. I literally redefined my insecurity. I have even added a new caption to advertise my profile:
"Hi.
I am a Voice Over Artist.
I'd talk like a cartoon character
if you let me."
if you let me."
Use your insecurity, don't let it use you.
Insecurity will probably be a constant battle for most of us, if not all of us, but the more you overcome your insecurities and learn how to use them to your advantage, the better off you'll be.
In any moment of fleeting insecurity, know that you are not alone. It's normal to feel insecure once in a while. You’re a human being finding your way through living. It’s fine. You’re fine. We’re all here learning. Growing. Unveiling. Discovering.
Always remember that no one else can sound like you sound and move like you move . . . no one else can do it exactly the way you do it.
*I'll say this in Velma's voice* Be you, do you. You've got this!

P.s Bro Gabriel meant no harm oh. It was just that my insecurity got triggered. Let's not let 'em triggers keep us down. ✌
