You've Been Set Free. Walk In Your Freedom

I'd probably read "you are free indeed" in my Bible a hundred times but on one particularly difficult day, I found myself wondering how on earth it could be true. If Jesus had already set me free, then why did I feel so bound up? Why was I still stuck?

And so began my journey to find out what freedom really is, and how I can walk in that reality.

Walk In Your Freedom

I've come to believe that freedom is both a one-time gift and a process. The moment we come to Jesus Christ, He gives us freedom through the Holy Spirit so that we are no longer slaves to sin. But that freedom is something we need to learn to work out walk through.

It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.
– Galatians 5:1

The fact that Apostle Paul wrote this warning not to the world but to the church (Galatians 1:2) and that he used the phrase “again to a yoke” indicates that he knew it was possible for us to become bound. . .bound again.

I paraphrase Galatians 5:1 this way: “Don’t you realize that Christ gave up everything so you could be free? The cross purchased your freedom from every yoke and replaced it with Christ Himself. Nothing can hold you captive now without your permission."

Let's learn to live in Christ’s glorious freedom; stay on the alert so we don’t return to captivity.

We have:

  • Freedom from condemnation

Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
(Romans 8:1)

  • Freedom from fear
For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline.
(2 Timothy 1:7)

  • Freedom from judgment
If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
(Romans 10:9)

  • Freedom from perfectionism
And through Him [Jesus] everyone who believes is freed from all things, from which you could not be freed through the Law of Moses.
(Acts 13:39)

  • Freedom from sin

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23)

  • Freedom to live fully
Act as free men, and do not use your freedom as a covering for evil, but use it as bondslaves of God. (1 Peter 2:16)

  • Freedom to face the future
Yet those who wait for the Lord will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary.
(Isaiah 41:31)

There are a lot of different things that have helped me walk in freedom. One important one is to get to know God. What better way to find out how to achieve freedom than to spend time with the One who gives it?

Another thing I needed to do to learn to walk in freedom is to say YES to grace and say NO to sin. Accepting grace into my daily life was one of the keys to helping me overcome my struggle with habitual sin. I used to try to achieve obedience, freedom and mastery over my sin by my own strength. I would pray and ask for God's help, of course; but then when I'd fall, I'd beat myself up for a good amount of time because of my fall.

Today, I can honestly say that I feel free. I am free indeed. Free, indeed. I no longer feel bound and burdened by my struggles. That doesn't mean I have all the answers, and it certainly doesn't mean I'm not tempted or that I don't stumble. What it means is that when I do fall, I'm quick to accept grace and the help I need to get back up and keep going.

Maybe that's what freedom really is — not that we never stumble but that we are willing to embrace the process that leads to freedom. Maybe freedom is not just a destination, but a lifelong journey.

Have you ever felt as though you were a prisoner even though you were not behind bars?

Have a terrific week!
Stay inspired.
Stay positive.
Stay free.
